Overview
JavaScript can run on any device that has a JavaScript Runtime Environment (JRE). The heart of the JRE is the JS Engine — a piece of software (not hardware) that interprets and executes JavaScript. Understanding how the engine works — parsing to AST, JIT compilation, garbage collection — explains why JS is both flexible and fast.
Google's V8 is the most widely used JS engine, powering Chrome and Node.js. This episode exposes V8's internal architecture.

JavaScript Runtime Environment (JRE)
The JRE is a container that can run JavaScript code. It consists of:
- JS Engine — the core that executes JS (the heart of the JRE)

Different environments have different JREs:

ECMAScript Standard
ECMAScript is the governing body/specification that defines how JavaScript should behave. All JS engines must follow ECMAScript rules. The current version is ES2024 (ES15). This is why the same JS code runs consistently across all compliant engines.
The JS Engine Is Software, Not Hardware
The JS engine is software written in a lower-level language (V8 is written in C++). It takes high-level JavaScript code and produces machine code that the computer's processor can execute.
The 3 Steps: Parsing → Compilation → Execution
Step 1: Parsing
The engine reads your JavaScript source code and breaks it down:

Step 2: Compilation — JIT (Just-In-Time)
JavaScript used to be purely interpreted (line by line, slow). Modern engines use JIT compilation — a hybrid approach:
- Interpreter (Ignition in V8): Takes the AST and converts it to bytecode — an intermediate representation that starts executing immediately
- Compiler (TurboFan in V8): While the interpreter runs, the compiler monitors execution. Frequently executed code ("hot" code) is optimized — compiled to highly efficient machine code
- Deoptimization: If the compiler's assumptions turn out to be wrong (e.g., a variable type changes), V8 deoptimizes back to the interpreted version
This combination delivers both fast startup (interpreter) and high peak performance (compiler).

Execution needs two components:
- Memory Heap: Where all objects, functions, and variables are stored in memory
- Call Stack: Manages the execution of function calls (LIFO)
Garbage Collection — Mark and Sweep
V8 uses the Orinoco garbage collector, which employs the Mark and Sweep algorithm:
- Mark: Starting from root references, traverse all reachable objects and mark them as "alive"
- Sweep: Any unmarked object (unreachable from roots) is considered garbage and its memory is freed
This is why objects that are no longer referenced (and not closed over by active closures) are automatically cleaned up.
